A workbook for 8th grade (Australian Stage 4) History students who are studying ancient societies. Students are taken through the rudiments of writing a short story, but the primary focus is on using historical sources to develop and express empathy with people in the past. There are ten chapters with formative and summative tasks which work through the research and writing of the short story, and peer-review activities to teach proofreading and editing practice. Three original short stories are used to demonstrate historical short fiction, and there is a final incomplete story which teachers can finish to show students their own writing skills - or which can be set as an assessment task.
